Hi all.
I'm back from a month in Italy. If you recall, at the end of the last
episode I was trying to fly a 7.5 ft Greenland-style paddle with Air France
from San Francisco to Florence.
Well, I wrapped the thing up with plastic sheeting and duct tape and just
brought it to check in with my two smallish bags. Even though the limit was
two items, they accepted all three with a little discussion and no problem.
I think it was in part because the two bags I had were smaller and lighter
combined than some of the single bags I saw get checked.
It arrived in Florence just fine, and I carried it via bus, taxi and ferry
to Elba. And I must say, after I left the paddle at the kayak center on
Elba, traveling with just the two bags and my daypack, by comparison, was a
breeze.

I traveled to Japan with a greenland stick, 2 HUGE bags, a day pack and a
Backpacker guitar. It was a PITA <pain in the a$$> The subways and train
systems in Japan are a challenge with *no* luggage! LOL. I made a great
paddle container out of a PVC pipe with pipe fittings for end caps and a piece
of webbing for the handle. It holds two paddles and is basically
indestructible. I have traveled all over the place with it. I have never
been charged extra and I have flown to Japan, North Carolina, Alaska, and
California with it.
