[Paddlewise] Electric Bilge Pump Experiment

For the last month or so, I have been experimenting with an electric bilge
pump in my kayak.  I am paddling in freshwater  not sea water.  To date I
have had to replace the marine grade switch because it stopped working
after a couple of weeks of use.  While the use was admittedly heavy, I was
trying to debug the system and learn to roll, I don't think the switch
should die that fast.  I also have had problems with the pump apparently
sucking air and loosing prime.

Are there any other electric pump users out there that have had success
with cures for similar problems?  If so, what worked.
