Picked up a copy of Shelley Johnson's brand-new book, "A Ragged Mountain
Press Woman's Guide: Sea Kayaking" [Ragged Mountain Press
(McGraw-Hill), ISBN 0070329559, US$14.95] the other day. Very
well-written and illustrated. I had no major quibbles with any of her
advice, rare for sea kayaking guides. I'd recommend it highly for
either gender as an introductory "how-to" book. Johnson is a longtime
SK instructor and guide from Maine and is currently the SK editor for
Canoe and Kayak Magazine.

I thought its approach was clearer and more detailed than other guides I
have read.

Shelley on one of the differences between men and women: "In my
experience, women often learn physical movements in a different fashion
than men. I have observed that women request more verbal explanation
and ask to see a move repeated more often than male students. Rather
than trying a move unattended, women students often ask me to lead them
through a move so they can "feel" what is expected."

Hmmmmm ... that certainly rang some bells in my little brain -- probably
explains some Mars/Venus stuff between my SO and me when I was
"teaching" her the sculling draw stroke. But that's another story.
