Victoria Jason and Don Starkle paddled the Hudson Bay and survived their encounters. A polar bear stalked Vicki for over two hours, just a mere 15 yards or so behind her, as she maintained a torrid pace to evade. No thanks to Don Starkle for having pushed her yak backwards to within a few paddle lengths of the bears jaws in revenge for her refusal to give him what was her personal paddle. As she glanced back the black nose and beady eyes had a fixed gaze on her for the duration of her effort. Fortunately the bear lost interest. It is said that polar bears are known to be capable of swimming after prey for up to fifteen hours continuously. It is also said that they can bust open a refrigerator with but one blow of their paw. Good reason to pack a 10-mm Glock for such circumstances as far as I am concerned. A canaster of 'Bear Scare' would have been perfect while on the water but one would have to pause and thereby surrender their cadence to turn around and discharge the contents in the general direction. Moreover one has to becareful about the direction of prevailing breeze with that stuff. Might be better to just throw it backwards and let the bear bite into the cannister. Now that would prove interesting for the bear! Better yet, just be aware and keep your distance from polar bears at all costs and not paddle with a character like Don Starkle.
