Folks,

The whaling discussion has also been going on on CPAKayaker (a Chesapeake
Bay area kayaking listserv), where Robin Snow, who has paddled with Steph
Dutton in his grey whale research, posted this item from Heidi (I
think). I thought I'd pass it on.

I'm also passing on a second one from Heidi, which was forwarded to
CPAKayaker later.

Apologies to those who have already seen these on CPAKayaker.

clear cut timber companies, which aided in destroying the NW salmon fishery.
This is not subsistence whaling. They have a supermarket. Their own elders,
who remember the end of tribal whaling of the makah, are AGAINST this. They
have been rewarded by their "respectful" juniors by having their tires
slashed. Alberta Thompson, one such elder, also reports her grandson was
beaten badly by his tribal brothers for her actions. "Maintaining" a culture?
>HA!
>I lived in the Northwest. I fished salmon and had a promising future doing
it until a lot of things conspired to destroy the fishery. These things
included the timber indusrty, pulp mills, commercial fishers, sport fishers,
charter fishers, Indians fishing AND people who allowed their land to be
stripmined for trees that will never grow back in the abundance they once
were, thus wiping out prime spawning beds and salmon habitat (silting up the
streams, removing the shade so the eggs in redds cooked in the sunlight).
>What did I do when I saw the writing on the wall? Claim I'm a white woman in a
>male-dominated industry who must be protected by the government and paid
back for my stupidity? No. I got out of it and went on, always pro-active in
trying to protect the fishery, THE FISH.
>You think it is overstated to say it's just opening the door if the Makah,
who have never in their lifetime hunted whales and whose own elders admit
they are not doing it traditionally nor for the right reasons, are allowed
to kill whales? I suggest you contact the Canadian tribes along the Pacific
coast before you repeat that one again. They are ready and waiting. All very
well funded by the Japanese and Norwegian pirate whalers (who cheer people
like you on).
>Schools, becoming creative in finding new ways to make a living, that is
how you evolve. If the Makah want to go the way of the dinosaurs, they're
doing it. I offered to teach them how to pass USCG tests so they can start a
whale-watching business there. I have not heard from them. Much better to
kill a few whales, collect the big bucks from pirate whalers and wait for
the next option that doesn't require innovation nor a lot of effort. How
hard is it to fire a bullet the size of a chihuahua?.
