I have been paddling a one week vacation in the Canadian Gulf Islands or the
American San Juans every year for the past several. I always take a fishing
rod with some Scampi's and Buzz Bombs hoping to catch dinner. (I always
stop fishing after I get one or two.) However, I am a lousy fisherman.
Over 6 days I might catch 2 10 inch rock fish. What with licenses and lost
jigs it works out to many dollars per pound of protein.

I don't want to troll and have no hope of a salmon. I generally fish at
the edge of kelp beds. I let the jig to the bottom and rhythmically raise
the rod tip. If I don't get a strike within 15 minutes I assume that there
are no fish in that spot. Where are the larger ground fish? If you are not
familiar with the area how do you decide where to try?

Last week I was camped at D'Arcy Island near Sidney, and fished around it
for an hour or so. Ended up eating Top Ramen.

The worst day fishing beats the best day at the office.

Jerry
