Just a quick comment on the thread about the use of handguns against large
bears.

Might be joking on behalf of Philip and Philip, but the idea is a serious
no-no.

Handguns are of limited use against brown (grizzly) and polar bears.  Even
the most powerful calibre handgun is considered ineffective or simply
marginally effective against these animals -- most likely it will just
wound them and make it a more dengerous situation.

Instead prepare yourself by learning how to avoid an unpleasent encounter
-- most bear encounters are completely benign and will not need lethal
force to resolve.
