The Mariner sliding seat is more related to the stone age rather than the
Machine age. The principal of moving weight forward or back to trim the
handling of a kayak is probably as old as the kayak. 
 
A rudder or a retractable skeg makes it "easier" to paddle and therefore
retards technique development. Every time the rudder is dropped, because sea
conditions are looking rough, is a missed opportunity to improve. If the kayak
design requires a rudder you have no choice.
