[Paddlewise] Inland weather

This past weekend, 3 of us Atlantic salties headed for the mountains and
some fresh water paddling on the Saranac Lakes in the Adirondacks of NY.
Much to our dismay, when we were preparing for our day of paddling and
turned on the weather, we got nothing but static. I tried it on my VHF,
someone else tried it on their little weather radio. Nothing on all 3
receivers. What gives? Weather only happens on salt water? As it turned
out, a terrible storm did kick up; downpours, a good 40 mph wind,
thunder/lightening. Fortunately, it came in the evening when we were off
the water and back in camp.

Please advise; I hate not being able to monitor the weather regardless of
where I am.
