Hi,
I need a good cheap way to put my 14 ft long Necky Dolphin on top of
my campershell-less pick up truck. When I put it in the back it sticks up
to high
to get in the garage...

What about?
Just good wood 2X2's in the 6 holes (3 on each side, anchored well to truck
bed...
then cross bars on top of poles, anchored with large screws... paint
white... add pads...

Doa-able?

Tom

I ran into a guy a couple months ago who had created a kayak rack for
his pickup just like you described, and it seemed to work great. In
additional, he made a couple plywood cutouts that matched the cross
section of his hull, bolted these to the front and back cross bars, and
covered them with carpet for padding.

That should work OK. I would suggest only 2 crossbars, though. With
three, your kayak will alway be bent in some direction. Also, I's
recommend some kind of triangulation. Perhaps a diagonal brace between
the fron and back uprights. Maybe even a cable from a corner down into
the bed in an out of the way spot.

I would also add corner braces, and use pressure treated wood.

Do you realize how toxic this teated wood is, it is one of the worst thing
I know about...

It has been proven that after acouple years outdoor in the elements, it
still carries a very high level of toxicity

I have had numerous P.U truck, and loads of racks for this and that, a
light coat of any kind of fininsh will do just fime on regular wood...

I am amazed the schools and parks departments use it for children'
playgrounds...

There have been many reported cases of hospitalisation caused by this wood,

Do yourself a favor and do not use it...

Through work, [ lanscaping & organic farm / garden consulting] i suggest to
remove any of that wood and replace it with other types. around here I
suggest Tamarac [ a hard wood evergreen which looses it's needles in the
fall to grow new ones in the spring...It is very hard, will last forever,
and with a coat of finish is practically undestructable...

Just my advice
have fun

Yours naturally

I built a rack similar to what you describe using 2X2 screen room aluminum
that I scrounged when a friend rennovated his porch. I made cushions and
saddles from boogie-boards discarded at the beach and indoor-outdoor carpet
scraps. Works great. It's super strong and light - I carry a canvas and
cedar canoe and a 15 ft Prism kayak at the same time. And the price was
right.
