I get along quite nicely at ~~5 mph without really thinking about it too much. I paddle a Wenonah Advantage with a German Shepherd in the back. We approach and probably exceed the prescribed weight limit, but she won't fit in a kayak. I also paddle double blade. Where I live, the summer weather is fine, but too hot for a closed cockpit. I do enjoy the extra comfort and feeling of security in a kayak when the winter storms blow and "I just gotta get out!"
