Hi Philip,
Backcountry veterans offer this piece of advice to those proposing to use
handguns (Glocks, .375 magnums, whatever)against grizzly or polar bears:
Be sure to file the front sighting notch off. This is so that it won't hurt
quite as much when the bear shoves it up your, um, er, stern compartment
hatch.

Just a quick comment on the thread about the use of handguns against large
bears.

Might be joking on behalf of Philip and Philip, but the idea is a serious
no-no.

Handguns are of limited use against brown (grizzly) and polar bears. Even
the most powerful calibre handgun is considered ineffective or simply
marginally effective against these animals -- most likely it will just
wound them and make it a more dengerous situation.

Instead prepare yourself by learning how to avoid an unpleasent encounter
-- most bear encounters are completely benign and will not need lethal
force to resolve.
