To the List: I am looking for information. I am interested in learning more, much more, about the possibility of a long-distance trip (paddling) down the Mississippi River. The trip distance would be from Ford Dam near Minneapolis to New Orleans, about 2,940 kms.. Does anyone know if this has been done previously. And, if not, then is the trip feasible, yes or no. Are there any accounts written. I am looking for information to review, digest and consider. Also, I would appreciate any resources concerning (a) water flow, including obstructions, and (b) water quality, including risks, hazards, and the like. Government reports are acceptable. And, hey, are there really gators down near New Orleans? Please let me know. Timing and group are not factors, as this is an early planning stage inquiry. Not only has this been done by paddle many times, some guy *swam* the river to New Orleans earlier this summer (it might have been last summer). I didn't hear what the guy may have done to his skin after swimming in that...uh...water, but I wouldn't swim that far in that river without someone giving me a whole bunch of money. If you don't get enough information through this list, let me know and I'll post to the MN Canoe Assn list to see if anyone there can provide more info. I know that there have been swims down the length of the Mississippi, as well as, rafting trips. The water quality is poor, especially between Baton Rouge and NOLA. Approx. 60%+ of the US's chemicals are produced along this stretch. Good luck. Check with the riverboat folks who make the run each year. *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.gasp-seakayak.net/paddlewise/ ***************************************************************************
