RE: [Paddlewise] Superior death

Some more details regarding the death of the kayaker near Thunder Bay, ONT
Canada.

Michael was 36 years old, a strong swimmer and a former lifeguard. He was
6' 3" tall, 170 lbs and in excellent physical condition. According to
family members he had "some" kayaking experience, but was not what they
considered "proficient" or "expert".

Some time on Saturday May 16, 1998 he headed out on the water. He did not
file a float plan with anyone, including friends or family members. At 9 am
that day the winds were from the east at 8 knots. At 10 am the winds were
to 18 knots. At 1:20 pm they were 20 knots and increased to gusts of 35
knots over the afternoon. Sometime in mid-afternoon, a citizen on shore saw
a kayaker 1-2 miles offshore "making little progress" in estimated 10-12
foot waves. That is the last time he was seen alive.

He was not reported missing until Monday, May 18. When his body was
recovered on May 24, he was wearing a blue PFD, a T-shirt, shorts, and
shoes. No sprayskirt, no wetsuit, no drysuit.
