Nice abstract conundrum, but the reality is that it's quite easy to
tell in practice whether or not a PFD made the difference between
life and death.

If you'd like, I'll be happy to replicate the circumstances of one
of my experiences for you: meet me at Fayette Station, West Virginia;
we'll hike upriver a couple of miles to Greyhound Bus Stopper,
and you can jump into it sans PFD.
