I agree with Dan Hagen 100% in his comments on paddler control vs. boat design. Boat design will make a difference depending on what you want to use the boat for (an I-Rip will be easier to surf than an 18-ft. sea kayak). But boat control is up to the paddler. I paddle a Mariner Coaster which I have found to be the ultimate in speed, tracking, and maneuverability - a good argument for shorter sea kayaks (but that's another subject) - but I have to edge the boat correctly and use good stroke technique to control it. On many occasions I've watched two different paddlers in the same type of boat out in difficult conditions and observed one paddler having no problems while the other paddler was completely out of control. I think this makes the point.
