It was named by Able Tasman a Dutch explorer who charted part of Australia and part of New Zealand in 1769 or thereabouts. He named New Zealand after a Province in South-west of Holland (= The Netherlands) were Tasman was born .He was a well known Dutch explorer. 125 years later Captain Cook from Brittain followed his route . "Encarta" gives a short but quite good introduction to these islands. And I can assure you it is a great place for paddling ,sailing, tramping and mountaineering.
