The recent water trail conference was hosted by NAWT, North American Water
Trails, Inc., which is a sort of national umbrella organization for water
trail associations and agencies developing water trail recreational
facilities. I have been to several of their previous conferences as a
representative of the Lake Superior Water Trail Association of Minnesota,
but was unable to attend this last one. Dave Getchell, Sr., one of the
founding members of NAWT, edited and largely wrote a water trails handbook,
Modern Water Trails, which was directed at the development of water trail
projects, and was never intended to be a guidebook as such for the public.
By joining the organization, you can get a copy of the book.

The water trail movement, like the Rails-to-Trails bicycle trail movement,
has the potential to provide many more kayak/canoe-friendly paddling
facilities around North America and draw many new participants into the
sport. For anyone who thinks there are already enough paddlers out there,
keep in mind that our natural areas, our wildlife, and our waterways need
all the help they can get from quiet sports-minded enthusiasts, to
counteract the gasoline-crazed, develop everything at all costs mentality.
