In heavy winds a short Greenland storm paddle, used with a sliding stroke
really shines. The sliding motion and the design of the paddle leaves very
little blade exposed past the pushing hand to catch the wind.

A full-size Greenland paddle will produce a noticeable amount of wind drag
in a strong head wind but I agree with Barbara that handling in heavy winds
is very predictable and this is a tremendous asset when fighting gusty beam
winds.

At one point when I was paddling in the strong winds I mentioned
yesterday, I switched to my storm paddle, but I didn't feel any
difference in wind pressure. Of course, I don't think I was paddling
directly into the wind by then.

A couple of handy things about using a storm paddle as a spare is that
I can carry it on the foredeck, where it is easy to reach, and that it
requires no assembly. Since it is a spare, I practice rolling and bracing
with it, and occasionally I show off by dropping my standard Greenland
paddle, capsizing, grabbing the storm paddle, and rolling up with it.
