I used a Garmin GPS 12 on a trip last week and it worked quite well. I
was just using it as back-up in case landmarks got obscured, but I
tested it getting to a spot pre-programmed from the chart, and getting
back to the launch site. It got me within a hundred feet or so of both
targets. It also has some nice whistles like sunrise and set times at
your location, estimated time to target, corrections in course due to
currents, estimated speed, etc. Stores 500 "waypoints". It uses 4 AA
batteries, and seems to soak some juice up from the sun. The gauge would
go down a few notches, but come back up after resting for a while on the
deck. Pretty slick for $150 (what I paid for my first coal-fired
calculator).

It did come up with "insufficient satelite coverage" one time, but 10
minutes later it came back.
