I know Price/Costco (a warehouse store similar to Sams Club for you east coasters) has been carrying the Russian night vision scopes and goggles for about 2 years at slightly lower prices. I am not sure of the ability of these products to survive the moisture of a typical kayaking trip but they would probably work OK in a bag like those designed for taking your video-camera on a diving trip.
