Thanks to all who provided suggestions on the technical term for the rock "dust", "flour", "milt", etc. My "senior moments" had merged to such an extent that I could not remember the term I wanted --- but Ken Fink, geological oceanographer extraordinaire, came though with it --- loess. My dictionary calls loess "a buff to gray, fine-grained calcareous clay or silt, held to be a deposit of wind-blown dust." For two weeks, I called it my environment.
