The club to which I belong will not allow non-members to participate in club trips. I didn't know that until after I led a trip for the club this year. I had intended to take a friend who was not able to go. I was lucky, I guess, because at the very least a confrontation with the club president would have been embarrassing. The rationale I was given has to do with liability. All club members sign a disclaimer when they join.
