The News Hour with Jim Lehrer has an interesting segment on the Makah whale
hunt tonight. As usual for this program, the reporting seems well balanced
and fair.

For those interested --- thought this heads-up would be admissable on our
nets. For Left Coasters, this message might be on the line in time.

Could you give a summary for those who missed the report?

 Thanks...

I would sum it up pretty much like this: the Makah think it is their
spritual destiny to kill whales while Paul Watson (of the Sea Sheperd)
thinks it's his spritual destiny to talk to them (the whales, that is) :-)

If anyone is interested in reading the segment (I managed to transcribe
it from a recording I made), you can read it (for a short time only) at:

The part I saw consisted mainly of an elderly man named John McCarty
claiming that everybody opposed to the killing was opposed because
they're getting rich from money being donated to them in return for their
opposition. His son, Micah McCarty, was also filmed arguing that the sea
and the whales belong to the Makah and nobody has any right to tell them
what to do with their property.
There was some coverage of an anti-whaling group, with the newspeople
trying to get the leader of that group to say he was going to get himself
into a naval confrontation with the Coast Guard and the Feds. He was
smarter than that.
Overall, I thought it was the usual shallow, inadequate coverage. You
didn't miss much beyond some nice video shots of the Makah's big dugout
canoe.

LOL! Ain't this interesting! Looks like I found some long lost relatives!
Are you sure they were MCCARTY and not the other side of the clan that spells
 their name with an H?

My dad and grandpa always said we were part Indian. But I did not think my
 family got much past Indiana?

For the record Dear John and Micah are no relation! That I know of..... 8-)

 Thanks for the info.
