I second the suggestion of training with a heart monitor if you're seriously
interested in enhancing your physical performance. I've used one on and off
for several years, primarily in running, and for me, it's been extremely
useful. It's good to know (a) how hard your body is really working (not just
how it "feels") and (b) if you're "overtraining" to the point where your
body can't easily recover.
My only experience is with the "Polar" brand of monitors (most are
waterproof), but there are a number of others on the market which probably
perform equally well. For the techno-geeks among us, some of the high end
monitors even let you download your workout heart rate info into your PC for
performance tracking.
