I was faced with a similar problem in Mississippi, but minus the
whitewater (there is essentially no whitewater anywhere in MS). After
buying a big double for the very rare trips to the Gulf (100 miles away),
I bought a used WW kayak (T-Canyon) for near peanuts, slapped some deck
rigging and a strap-on skeg on it, and can enjoy paddling around the
local streams and lakes. Since learning how to paddle straight, I only
use the skeg when I'm watching wildlife or taking pictures.

I'm thinking of taking the WW boat out to the Gulf one of these days,
just to see how it does on big water. It has room inside for a bit of
gear for maybe a day trip. It's just not quite as fast as the big kayak.

I have a Macintosh.
