Although I prefer using a rod and reel for sport, I always carry a handline just in case. Handlines are cheap (you can easily make a nice one yourself), lightweight, rugged and compact. A handline is nice to have along as a backup to your rod and reel, and if you make it a part of your basic equipment then next time you run into something working the bait on the surface you'll be prepared.
