Does one overheat? >> Assuming you're in the drysuit because the water temp is also in the 40s or 50s, in my experience you're going to become hyperthermic unless you hydrate like crazy and cool down with a sculling brace or roll periodically. The head is a pretty good heat ventilation system, and, with a hood on to protect from cold shock, sticking your head in the water through a layback sculling maneuver or through a roll or half roll allows a lot of that excess heat to be sucked out of your body through your head and neck. You can actually regulate it pretty well if you pay attention to your temps, and hydrate the hell out of your body with plain water.
