Had a terrific storm last night with five meter waves on Georgian Bay (really bloody big for Georgian Bay). It was 23 years ago on November 10th that a similar storm sunk the Edmund Fitzgerald on Lake Superior. The Fitzgerald was the largest ship on the Great Lakes for many years. An interesting site devoted to the Fitzgerald can be found at http://www.acs.oakland.edu/~awesley/edm-fitz.html with some fascinating information about how the ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) reduced the legal freeboard required and how that may have contributed to the disaster along with some structural problems that were noticed but their repair was deferred. Interesting reading if marine disasters fascinate you.
