Take a look at this waterbag.

I have a couple of them. At 2.5 gallons they fit just about anywhere, even
behind my seat. With a nylon cover, they can take a lot of abuse. You can
hang them off a tree stub and just press the spigot. The spigot comes out
and you can stick the bag under a faucet or hose. It doesn't leak (under
normal use). You may need a small pair of pliars to get the spigot out.
There are also replacement parts.

I know they must be sold elsewhere, but Campmor is the only place I've
noticed them.

I have used this type water container for years, and love them. REI
also sells them, and I have one that I got with a subscription to
Backpacker magazine years ago. I use my teeth to remove the spigot.

Since I kayak mostly on fresh water, I travel with my water bags empty.
Empty, one takes up little more space than a couple of bandanas.

Some versions of this bag have a small loop of webbing near the spigot,
which is handy when you are filtering water into it. On Lake Superior,
I use this loop and a detachable strap that I made to hang the bag
around my neck and shoulders, spigot hole up, while I stand in the lake
and pump my PUR water filter.

Here's a tip for hanging one from a tree if there isn't a convenient
stub: Make a loop in the end of a two- or three-foot piece of parachute
cord and carry it with the bag (I loop it onto the bag's carry strap).
In camp, pass the cord around a convenient tree trunk and thread the
straight end through the loop on the other end. Snug it up against the
tree trunk. Find a small stick two or three inches long, and tie the
free end of the cord to the middle of it using a clove hitch and a half
hitch. You now have a toggle hanging from the tree from which you can
hang the bag by its carry strap.
