Anyone in the Washington metro area aware of any details on the WW kayaker
who's missing near Great Falls? Apparently it was on the local radio, but it
was too late to make the Post this morning. All I've heard --- second hand
--- is that he was working the Great Falls area, one of four boaters, and
disappeared.

Anything on CPAKayaker?

It was an incredibly beautiful day on the Potomac and in the Washington area
yesterday, with temps in the lower 70s. Great day for a paddle, but, for some
reason, the water thinks it's winter. It's 73 F on the St. Mary's River, just
where it feeds into the Potomac --- but the water is now in the upper 40s to
very low 50s throughout the area.

Let's all use some winter caurtions, folks!

The name of the kayaker was Scott Bristow, as of last night his body was
still not found. If you belong to any news groups rec.boats.paddle has
several things about this.

Below is the AP report. The boater was Scott Bristow of Marietta
Georgia. He was paddling a short (< 8') playboat, running Great Falls
with 3 other boaters. At one point, he missed a line and ran the wrong
way down a chute, backwards, ending up in a place called Charlie's Hole,
a violent recirculating hydraulic. His boat, paddle, and PFD were
recovered; he has not been as yet.

Scott was a well-liked and capable boater. He will be greatly missed by
many, many people.

Searchers Report No Signs of Missing Kayaker

Associated Press
Monday, November 30, 1998; Page B02

Searchers on land and in the air combed a section of the Potomac River
for two hours yesterday at the request of the family of a lost kayaker.

Once again, their search was futile.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Captain Jim Resnick said a wave known
as a hydraulic pulled the 26-year-old man underwater Saturday after his
craft overturned.

The man, from Marietta, Ga., had been kayaking with four friends between
Alger's Inn and Great Falls.

Resnick said the rapids there are considered difficult and ranked Class
3 and 4 on a scale of one to five.

It was Scott Bristow, a regular poster on Rec.boats.paddle. RBP has been full
of firsthand accounts, newspaper articles, notes about his family, etc., for
the past 3 days.
