Thank you all very much for the info. I had inadvertently forgotten to mention that my drysuit is a tri-laminate and is inherently very flexible albeit lacking any insulating qualities. I do normally wear a variety of thickness of synthetic underwear/garments to provide warmth. I will "burp" the suit and try it from there. Basically then the same procedure as diving. And finally, yes I will be wearing a paddling specific PFD while out!
