I do not have broad experience with alkaline-capable VHF's. I have only used ICOM's IC-M10A,
which is inexpensive, and reliable. It has been on the market for several years. I have my radios
tested periodically. I believe others on the list have more experience with alkaline-equipped
VHF's. Frankly, I would not expect there to be much difference between VHF's, these days, aside
from degree of "waterproofness." The latter was the subject of an extensive discussion on this list
a year ago or so. Perhaps Jackie can tell you how to chase it down -- it may be archived somewhere.

In the case of the M10A, it is not at all waterproof, so that the usual radio bag is a critical
piece of equipment. I suspect that alkaline battery compartments are more difficult to make
waterproof than NiCad compartments.
