It seems that when the patches were first issued, some instructors and
instructorees sewed the patches to their dry suits.  This resulted in
some unintended survival incidents especially for the most qualified
individuals, i.e. more patches, more needle holes.  The patch-issuing
institutions, the ACA and BCU, are now making the patches of iron-on
design.
