[Paddlewise] And to all a good night . . .

This has been a great December for paddling on the Hudson . . . two
weeks ago I was still out there on a morning before work. I saw a
ruddy duck (a new one on my embarassingly short life list) and
thrilled at the swiftness of my kayak in the water. But
getting to water is getting harder and harder now that the shoreline at
my boat club is a maze of winter-stored sailboats, and all the docks
have been hauled. Ever try getting into a sea kayak from a slimy
ladder on a bulkhead 8' above low tide?

With yesterday's 40 deg. drop in temp, from 65 to 25, it was time to
bring my boat home to the basement for the winter.

Time to go north and look for some snow. I'm signing off the list
for a few weeks. Thanks to all for great discussions about kayaking.

And let me add my own note of thanks to Jackie for maintaining this
terrific list for the year. As a newbie who missed the s_____s war,
I still appreciate the good natured tone of the discussions here, even
when people disagree strongly.

Oh yes, and I _always_ wear a life preserver, never carry flares,
have actually called home from a cell phone in my kayak when running
late, dont bother with a vhf, actually paddle alone, wear a wetsuit
when the water is cold, practice my roll at the end of every paddle, and havent
figured out anything useful to do with a condom in a kayak.

Merry Christmas to all!
