I posted a request for information on the "Speed Mate" device to the newsgroup "rec.boats.paddle" recently. Speed Mate is a device that acts both as a speedodometer and odometer. Their web site is at http://www.speedtech.com. There is a similar device called the "SpeedCoach" (see http://www.nkelectronics.com). There was some discussion in the newsgroup about using a GPS as an odometer but the conclusion was the accuracy was poor for speeds less than eight miles per hour. Costs for both the Speed Mate and SpeedCoach are in the $200 range.
