Who isn't a weekend paddler? VHF is the way to go but a RS weather radio is
better the none. 
There is also the Internet. I scourer these sites looking for interesting
weather. Is the Washington coast swell over 15 feet? Is the wind in the Sound
going be to be over 15 knots?
