"...theory that there is a massive US Trangia cover-up being undertaken by MSR" No, I don't think there is a massive conspiracy, just a lack of interest on the part of the consumer. I have worked in the retail outdoor equipment industry for 26 years and have seen a number of attempts to market alcohol stoves fall flat, at least in the Midwest. Gasoline burns hotter, is much cheaper, and can be used in the winter. Other parts of the world are paying far higher prices for gasoline, and white gas (Blazo, naptha, etc.) is much harder to find. Hopefully, when we in the US have to pay $4 per gallon for gas like the rest of the world [and force the 4WD megatanks off the roads- making more room for us bicyclists. : - ) ], there will be more of a market for fuels from renewable resources. My only experience with a Trangia was with a test model sent to me by the importer, and tried out on a group kayak trip about ten years ago. We burned through all our alcohol fuel before the gallon of stew was even too hot to put your finger in. Might have been good for heating a small tin of soup, though. Alcohol can also be run through many of the pressurized stoves, including MSR, Peak 1, and Primus, which might produce a hotter flame. Another option for those who feel the need to use air transportation might be to rent a stove at an outdoor store near the destination, or ship an empty stove back and forth via UPS or parcel post. Often when flying, the destination is a warm weather paddling area, and an additional option is to dispense with a stove entirely, and use foods that don't need cooking. This won't work for caffeine addicts, though.
