Chuck asks "how many rolls" (in a season - a month - how many at night - - etc) Well - I'm one of those compulsive types who has a deathly fear of needing to roll and not being able to do it. So - I do a few rolls almost every time I got out. And I paddle about 2-3 times a week during spring, summer, and fall, maybe 3-4 times a month during the coldest months of Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb. So maybe 400 or more rolls an a year. Virtually all of those are practice rolls. Some are way better than others. If I don't roll for a couple of months, the roll "degrades" worse than Sadam Hussein's capacity to use weapons.... I try to roll in windy, "wavy" conditions as well as in calm seas. I've never had a pool to practice in. Yes, I've had to roll when I didn't intend to. And yes, I've missed some rolls. And yes I've had to swim a few of times. Is there anyone who hasn't? And I've had days when I just didn't have a good roll - and one day last summer when I missed several rolls in a row. Now that's embarrassing!!!! So - I really need all that practice. Probably need more than I get. The water temperature here was 43 degrees F last week, so you bet I wear a neoprene hood and a drysuit when I roll in winter- and the drysuit even when I don't think I will roll.
