I came "onboard" Paddlewise in March, just late enough not to fully twig
that it was made up in large part, by and for refugees and veterans of the
Great Sponson Wars. For me, the main attraction was, and is, that
Paddlewise is sea kayak specific. In some of my early private
correspondence with John Winters, I informed him there had been this really
ugly debate on RBP around SeeThings. When I happened to go back and read
some of the signatures on the RBP postings, I blushingly realised that
telling John there had been a debate about SeeThings was approximately like
informing one of Winston Churchill's "few" that there had been, you know,
this like totally crucial air war called, I think, the Battle of Britain.

Anyway, even if the republic of Paddlewise was born in rebellion and
adversity, and for initially slightly negative reasons, it certainly seems
to me that today we exist and flourish for very positive ones. I really
enjoy being able to access a vast range of experience and perspectives on
any sea kayaking topic. Just recently I've vowed to better my weather
forecasting skills, and learned more of the hidden history of the Inuit,
for example.

So thanks my fellow Paddlewisers. Thanks especially to Jackie, for gently
"riding herd" on the free-wheeling discussion, and all your hard
behind-the-scenes work.

Happy Holidays,

Philip T.

I guess as a canoeist, that makes me an outsider. What the heck, paddling is
paddling. We have plenty in common & can learn from each other. I know I'm
learning at any rate. Besides, I went though the sp...n wars too.

I'll second that. It's a great group. Friendly, plenty of current info &
history. I enjoy it all even if I don't sea kayak.

I did a web search and came across ...
http://paul.merton.ox.ac.uk/ascii/ascii-12.html

On this site there is a ... "By Barbara L Nelson" at the end.

About that twelve days of christmas ... I dug deeper and
it seems it is really by Joan Stark

I found the clue at ...

and the bottom gives attribution and directs you to a web page
that Joan Stark maintains at ...

I am another of the veterans and injured combatants of the S____S wars over
on WaveLength. It seemed that the "discussions" would go on endlessly and
it also encouraged posters to be exceptionally rude. I took as much as I
could but finally decided that I was wasting my time trying to sort out the
signal from the annoying noise. I left Wavelength with a goodbye to those
members of the on-line community that I enjoyed reading. Several months
later I got an e-mail from Jackie suggesting that I give Paddlewise a try.
I did and it's everything that Wavelength should have been. Jackie has
done a terrific job.

Sometimes it still amazes me when I download my messages in the evening and
I've got between 50 and 70, most from Paddlewise. I've concluded that 90%
of the messages must get composed at work rather than at home. Anyway, not
only have I learned a lot about paddling, I've learned how to scan a
message really fast.

Thanks, Jackie, and also to all the others who share so much with the rest
of us.
