URGENT ACTION ALERT Wherever marine-based salmon farming is practiced, it poses a threat to wild fish and wild coastlines. For this reason, several years ago the British Columbia government instituted a moratorium on new farms. Since then we have learned a lot more about the threats of disease, drugs and alien species introductions. But the provincial government is also under tremendous pressures these days and will announce a decision this February. They need to be told we want the moratorium to stay in place. This is the 11th hour on this crucial issue. We need your help to preserve our wild salmon and wild coastline for future generations. We have posted a message to Premier Clark and his cabinet on our website (at www.WaveLengthMagazine.com). You can type your name at the bottom of the message, click, and it will be sent automatically to the BC government. This WILL make a difference. We also have links to five Fish Farm Factsheets (in PDF format) produced by the Georgia Strait Alliance for background information on the danger of alien species escapes, pollution from farms, drugs in farmed fish, harassment and shooting of marine mammals, opposition to fish farms by First Nations-environmental-recreation-and-tourism sectors, as well as the economic harm of fish farms on coastal communities.
