[Paddlewise] Paddling Cedar Key, Fl.?

Hi folks,

Next week I have an opportunity to escape the frozen tundra of the Upper
Chesapeake and head for the warm climes for some paddling and cycling.
My friend and I are planning to bring my CLC Mill Creek double to Cedar
Key. I've been wanting to visit there for some time.

I've read related paddling reports from the area on the GASP page and am
looking to the trip. We will be staying for about 4 days. Questions:

1. I checked the Cedar Key home page and found several motels and B&Bs.
Any suggestions? The budget is not overly strained, but I'd like to get
a good deal. Are there any places to particularly avoid?

2. Any "Mom and Pop" eateries that one would suggest?

3. Noteworthy watering holes with good happy hours?

4. Suggestions for spots for launching the kayak?

5. Suggestions for particularly good paddling routes?

6. I've camped/cycled in the national forest a few times, but have never
been to Juniper Springs or Salt Springs. They each advertise paddling.
Are either of these places worthy of a side trip from Cedar Key?

7. I'm not concerned about temperature (paddled here at home until it
froze a few weeks ago), but I'm wondering about winds this time of year.
Are there reasonably sheltered areas to paddle if the winds start
kicking up? What should I expect?

8. Any 30-50 mile cycling trip suggestions (other than the forest)?

Thanks much for any advice. I'm *really* looking forward to heading
south..

David and Lin Gulick
