Hi Robert,

I made the opposite transition - from whitewater to sea-kayaking.  If
you want to learn to paddle whitewater I would _highly_ recommend taking
some basic classes.  Whitewater paddling can be very fun, yet very
dangerous.  Learning the basics from qualified instructors and paddling
with experienced partners can shorten the learning curve and lengthen
your life.  Whitewater is an area where the "school of hard knocks"
might not be the best teacher. just my .02
