[Paddlewise] ice picks

I just wanted to thank whoever it was who posted the original suggestion
of using screwdrivers, and whoever added in the idea of using wooden
dowels with spikes in the ends, for helping pull yourself (in the kayak)
up onto the ice. I tried the dowels today. We just had a warmer spell
and some strong winds so an area of water opened up about 50 metres from
shore. I used the picks to slide all the way out and then back in again
when I was done paddling. They worked very well, and were much better
than trying to push with a paddle or using my hands. I drilled holes in
the other ends and tied strings to them so if I dropped the picks, I
could just pull them back.

Thanks again. Great ideas.

John
