I do not like to exert myself while underwater. Re-entering and then rolling up requires effort while underwater, so I find that I am panting for breath by the time I complete the task. Being short of breath is the last thing which I wish to face in nasty waves. I also find re-entry and roll to be very difficult to perform in rough water simply because it takes so much coordination while upside down and under water. All in all, I find it to be more of a stupid pet trick which is fun in pools and at the beach than a viable rough water self-rescue technique. For those who can pull it off with ease in conditions which are rough enough to have already flipped them and have caused them to swim after having repeatedly missed their roll, more power to them.
