I found Dowd to be opinionated and definitive in his recommendations, but got a lot out of his book. I'm with Scott on this one, I guess -- anybody who srites a book on sea kayaking probably has to have a well-developed ego, and ego is one of the things which makes someone an "expert." The softspoken often get "soft-listened" to.
