Per suggestion to new members, I'd like to introduce myself to PaddleWise
members. My name is Doug Lloyd; I live and paddle in Victoria, BC, Canada.
I have been paddling a ruddered Nordkapp for 20 years. I do a little writing
for Sea Kayaker and Wavelength Magazines. I am currently looking for safety
article material for Sea Kayaker Magazine. Please make a note of my e-mail
address, and forward any accident or incident information to me, if you
would like, for follow up.

I am also looking for specific information regarding a couple who died off
Baffin Island last July. I understand from the brother that there was a lot
of discussion on this untimely tradgedy over the net. Does anyone have info
on these matters? This is an unpleasant task, and your support will be
appreciated.

Doug Lloyd

If you do something on PFD's, there has been a number of folks that are
using carabiners to secure their tow-rope to their PFD's. The carabiner
that came with my (Lotus) tow-rope did not have a locking device on it. I
was in the surf...on a sit-on-top. When knocked over, I fell off, at which
time my carabiner cliped onto a deck line and I was trapped underneath the
kayak. I was able to hold my breath in the surf long enough to un-snap
myself. I have replaced the caribiner with a "locking-carabiner." Now I
won't worry about being accidentally clipped underneath the kayak, or to
any other line that happes to be in the way during a capsize.

Seems like an appropiate bit of data to publish on safety.

I found a 'beaner in a dive shop that had a slide-lock to keep the 'beaner
from opening. You have to pull down a collar to open the 'beaner. I've
also seen one that has a screw-lock. Since aluminum corrodes so readily, I
reasoned that the slide-lock was less maintenance. I discared the
"clip-type" 'beaner.
