Actually, I'm not sure what the subject line should read. After yesterday's 5 hour paddle, today the muscles in the back of my leg are sore. I caught myself several times pressing real hard on the foot pegs. Is this normal? Could this be the result of the foot pegs not adjusted properly? I find my leg position in my kayak to always be uncomfortable. I've tried placing my knees where they touch the deck, but this seems hard to hold for any long period of time. Most of the time my legs are just slightly bent and pressing on the foot pegs...sometimes very strongly on each paddle stroke. Almost like I'm bouncing on them. My knees tend to just hang in the air and I'm also pretty bow legged). With my knees against the deck, I feel "almost" in the right position, but just to low to hold for hours at a time. If I could bring my knees up another couple of inches I think it would feel fine. My heels touch each other and my feet angle out to the pedals. Maybe everything is fitting properly and my leg muscles are just getting tired from the workout? Thanks in advance for the hints and ideas.... I use a stuff bag filled with foam rubber; a buddy of mine uses a roll of foam rubber held together with ductape. This takes a lot of stress off of the legs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Wes Boyd 0 wesboyd_at_dmci.net boydwe_at_dmci.net (Listservers) \__Q http://www2.dmci.net/users/wesboyd/default.htm \_| http://www2.dmci.net/users/wesboyd/kayak.htm \----------\^----------/ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^0^^^^^^^^^^^^ *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.gasp-seakayak.net/paddlewise/ ***************************************************************************

Roughly how big is the roll (diameter)? Wes, I think you have a good idea, Matter of fact I am hoping to extend my seat a bit further with some [is it closed cell foam?] foam I have used to do the majority of "fitting out" my kayak. It was something I was contemplating before I got "land-locked..." in March. Clearly I will attempt a follow through on this. I have a wonderful Article by a fellow a little bit up north about Fitting Out a Kayak that Robert might find helpful as well. Experience by those who've done this are happy with the results... Hope this also helps... Remember the bean bag chairs? Sure works. Those bean bags can serve other purposes. On long canoe trips in the Canadian territories we used to carry a small pillow of styrofoam beads as a "tripod" when using long focal length lenses. The bag form and would sit securely atop the canoe bow, a tree system, rock or other projection. The camera would nestle snugly on top of the bag. I've used this system with up to 200 mm lens quite successfully. RGM Philip Wylie wrote: > > Wes Boyd wrote: > > > Get yourself some sort of pillow and stuff it under your legs. The bean bag and foam pillows sound like great ideas! Thanks for all the suggestions. Now where did I put that bean bag....? The pad I use is about four inches thick, six inches wide, and about fourteen inches long. It doesn't impede getting in or out at all, probably because I have a fairly large cockpit, although I'm a pretty big guy, too. I started out with a sheet of foam rubber that I rolled and folded various ways to get the most comfortable configuration. I had real pain in staying in the boat more than about an hour before I came up with this -- it makes a world of difference. Hmmmm . . . **very good idea!** I've been following a discussion foam, as opposed to inflatable paddle floats, but have wondered just where I would stash the beast . . . it might be a little firmer than I'm looking for, but will chew it over and give it a try . . . ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Wes Boyd 0 wesboyd_at_dmci.net boydwe_at_dmci.net (Listservers) \__Q http://www2.dmci.net/users/wesboyd/default.htm \_| http://www2.dmci.net/users/wesboyd/kayak.htm \----------\^----------/ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^0^^^^^^^^^^^^ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Wes Boyd 0 wesboyd_at_dmci.net boydwe_at_dmci.net (Listservers) \__Q http://www2.dmci.net/users/wesboyd/default.htm \_| http://www2.dmci.net/users/wesboyd/kayak.htm \----------\^----------/ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^0^^^^^^^^^^^^ *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.gasp-seakayak.net/paddlewise/ ***************************************************************************
