Every once in a while as I read this list, I get the eerie sensation of an occasional person who (?appears to?) believe that if you're just as expert as they are, you'll never get into trouble. It brings to mind Tom Wolfe's description of the first astronaut candidates, who were the most skillfull pilots anywhere, but who nevertheless occasionally fell out of the sky and died. Every time it happened, the surviving pilots would ruminate over drinks about how that particular guy wasn't really very good, or never properly prepared, etc. Some things are inherently dangerous. Kayaking is much less dangerous than flying jet fighters....and I'm no astronaut. But I can still get into trouble when I least expect it. So can some others. Safety. Backup systems for the backup systems.
