I'm yet another "old fart" at 51 and am basically a canoer. I live in Minneapolis -- and I note that this area seems well represented on this list. I've canoed since the 70's and have paddled about 3000 miles on rivers, not to mention several dozen trips to the Boundary Waters. My favorite Boundary Waters route: all of 'em. I am a neophyte kayaker who took instruction from George Gronseth two summers ago (a great excuse to spend a week on the coast). I planned to rent and paddle numerous boats last summer with the intent on picking out a boat to buy. Alas, a persistent bout of tendonitis in the shoulder prevented that. A cortisone shot finally cured the shoulder in time for a fall Boundary Waters canoe trip. I hope to get into a yak again this summer to restart the learning process. Until I improve my skills, I will stay on local lakes or go to Voyageur's National Park, and will venture on the big lake only with organized trips. My major limitation is that I have no place to store boats, so I guess I'm going to have to move. :-) I'm down to a basic aluminum canoe - but when I buy the yak I will store it in the living room if I have to. I've been on the list for several years and cannot believe how much you can learn by absorption. Keep up the good work! Larry Snow Andy Knapp's right. It's winter -- and it's supposed to be cold! *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.gasp-seakayak.net/paddlewise/ ***************************************************************************Received on Tue Feb 09 1999 - 05:31:53 PST
